Spring Maintenance Tips For Your Residential Security System

Spring Maintenance Tips For Your Residential Security System

As spring approaches, it’s time for seasonal home maintenance. While some people may focus on spring cleaning, if you have a residential security system you should make sure everything is working right and you’re prepared for the warmer spring and summer nights when more people are out and about. Even though the nights might be shorter, spring and summer are prime months for crime, as thieves don’t have to worry about the freezing cold, sliding on ice, or leaving footprints in the snow. Prevent crime before it happens by ensuring your residential security system is up to date and ready to alert you and your security provider.

How To Maintain Your Residential Security System

Replace Batteries And Lights
Replace the batteries in all of your home safety equipment including the alarm system, if it has any battery-operated components, as well as the smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, or any remote controls for any security or home devices. You may need to test the components to see if the batteries in your equipment are working. Check that all of your outdoor lights are working so that everything is visible for your residential video surveillance system and so that no one (or animals) can hide in the shadows.

Clear The Outdoors
If you have motion detectors or if you have a residential video surveillance system, you will want to remove any tree branches that could impair the ability of either of these to function properly. If there has been any growth or changes to the foliage around your home that could be an easy place for someone to hide, this should also get trimmed. As the snow starts to melt, make sure that your home address numbers can still be easily viewed and that none of your cameras were damaged by the Calgary winter weather.

Clean
During the winter, snow blowing around can easily deposit grime onto the camera. Make sure to wipe down the lenses of your cameras so that you get as clear a view as possible. If your residential security system uses a DVR, or other similar device, make sure it runs effectively by dusting it on the outside with a microfiber cloth and removing any internal dust buildup using a compressed air blower.

Test The Security System
Your control panel should have a “test” mode on it, but you should contact your security provider before using it. While you do want to test the system, you don’t want to trigger any false alarms. To test your security system you can also contact your provider and inform them you want to do a walkthrough test where you activate your alarm and then go and intentionally trip the alarms. If you don’t remain on the line with your security provider during the test you’ll have to call the company to inform them when the test is complete and to determine if all of the alarms worked properly. You can also check your main panel for any problems such as damages, wiring issues, or lack of keypad sensitivity.

Get An Annual Inspection
While doing the above inspections yourself is a good way to make sure everything is in working order, you can also contact your security company to get an expert audit. Having the professionals do an inspection is a sure-fire way of ensuring that your residential alarm system is working at full capacity and giving peace of mind to you and your family.
