  • Is Your Home and Family Safe When You Leave? The 411 on Home Security Systems

We leave our homes for work, for vacation and we depend on our security systems when we sleep. But how truly secure is your home when you’re away or asleep?

Home security systems provide protection and peace of mind from intruders.  Studies show the presence of a home security sign alone is a significant deterrent to potential intrusions. Home security is form of insurance. When weighing the low cost of setup and a nominal monitoring fee, against rate reductions and 24 hour protection, it's a purchase that requires little consideration.

Our clients recognize the importance of home security, but can feel overwhelmed by the technical decisions involved with device selection and deployment.

Home security systems can be divided into two categories:

Wired Systems

Traditional home security systems physically wired in your home and linked to each entry point — doors, windows etc. — via sensors.

Wired systems are integrated into your home electrical system ensuring power. Advantages to home security wired systems are:

  • Reliability
  • Less interference from electronics emitting radio frequency signals and home based and neighbouring Wifi networks.
  • Wired systems have built back-up batteries in case of power outage.

A few possible disadvantages:

  • Installation can be tricky.
  • After installation, hiding wires in older homes may be difficult.
  • Leaving your alarm system behind if you move.

Wireless Systems

Functionally similar to wired home security systems, but without the hassles of physical installation and securing power integration. Your house transforms into a SmartHome with a wireless security system with the technology linked to them. Some of the advantages include:

  • Quick and easy to install, especially in older or smaller homes.
  • Installation can include areas without electrical outlets.
  • Remote surveillance from your computer or smartphone.
  • Home security automation — arm or disarm your home remotely.

Alternatively, wireless systems to have slight drawbacks including:

  • Requiring batteries to be replaced periodically.
  • Sensors must be installed relative to control panel for the system to function properly.
