8 Business Security Tips For Closing Time

Given the rising crime rate in Calgary, business security is becoming increasingly important, especially during closing times, or when you are leaving your shop/office for a long weekend or vacation.

To ensure that your business is in the same condition in the morning as when you left it, here are some simple and easy security tips to follow when locking up.

  1. Leave your storefront lights on overnight: Leaving your storefront lights on overnight will not only discourage thieves from entering your store, but it will also ensure that any intruder is visible from the street.

  2. Keep your exterior lights on. A well-lit exterior also acts as an excellent deterrent for unwanted visitors. It’s important to ensure that you illuminate the front, side, and back entrances of your business. If there are any burnt-out bulbs, these should be replaced as quickly as possible.

  3. Ensure all your customers have left the premises before closing up. Before closing up, you must make sure that there are no customers left inside your shop or building. Ensure your employees check the back rooms, stock rooms, and changing rooms, to ensure that no one is left with access to your property after the doors have been locked.

  1. Check all equipment is turned off. Before leaving for the night, do a walkthrough of your premise and check off all the items that need to be powered off. This could be decorative lights, portable heaters, and other heating equipment.

  2. Lock away your cash register and any valuables. Make sure that you don’t leave any cash or valuables in rooms that are accessible by windows or external doors.

  3. Secure your stock. Before closing up, always move excess stock to a locked room or drawer in your store. You should also move them away from any windows and doors. While these may seem like small steps, they could mean the difference between someone being tempted to rob your business, or being dissuaded from doing so.

  4. Lock all your windows and doors. While this may seem like a no-brainer, it’s important to make sure that all your windows and doors are locked, so that no burglar can easily enter the shop. Make sure to also check and lock back entrances and windows.

  5. Turn on your security system. Last but not least, you must make sure that your business security system is turned on before leaving for the night. This security could take numerous forms, including IP cameras and silent alarms. IP surveillance cameras are particularly useful because they are a great deterrent and they allow you to keep an eye on your property remotely.
